Presentación

The Department of English Philology at the University of Jaén is pleased to offer its Master’s Degree in English as a Medium for Intercultural Communication (MIVCI) for the 2007-2008 academic year. This Master’s Degree Course has been preceded by the Department’s Doctoral Degree Course taught from 2002 to 2006, entitled “Lingüística, Literatura y Didáctica del Inglés” (English Linguistics, Literature and ELT Methodology) and awarded a Distinction for Quality by the Spanish Ministry of Education.

This Master’s Degree Course is aimed at students and professionals who are interested in updating their knowledge in the different fields of this language. In this respect, the course highlights the English language as a locus and means of communication as well as a global meeting point of diverse cultures, countries and activities.

It lays special emphasis on and is related to the pioneering initiatives of plurilingualism which have recently been put into effect by the “Junta de Andalucía” (the Andalusian regional government). From 2006 this English Department has already proved to be a fruitful collaborator of the “Delegación Provincial de Educación” (the regional government’s education office) of Jaén in this ambitious project and will continue to be so in the immediate future, among other means, through this Master’s Course.

The latter is of a marked practical and professional character and offers complete training in diverse aspects of the reality of this language as a universal lingua franca and as a national second language in an increasing number of countries. It is a flexible Master’s Course in that it is structured around different modules which can be studied as part of a complete programme or as independent training modules chosen individually; they can be studied in one academic year or part time over a period of several academic years. On completion of each module an official certificate will be issued to the successful participant. Finally, this Master’s Degree proves to be greatly versatile due to the wide diversity of profiles around which the course is based: instrumental English, the context of culture, plurilingualism, the business world and employment market, new technologies, translation and finally, an initiation into research for those participants who wish to continue their academic training beyond this Master’s Degree through the realisation of doctoral studies.

Doctoral Degree

Our Master’s Degree allows its participants to begin research on a doctoral thesis leading to the title of Doctor from the University of Jaén. Given the mixed and multidisciplinary nature of the proposed Master’s Degree Course, the Department does not believe it necessary to undergo preparatory seminars on research training as this groundwork will already have been achieved through the basic module contents of the above-mentioned course. Nevertheless, in order to begin research on a doctoral thesis the student must have completed the module entitled “Research in English Studies”.

Proposed areas of research:

-Varieties and Variations of English worldwide (literary and non-literary texts).

-Cultural studies in English.

-The teaching of English in a plurilingual context.

-The production and reception of texts in English for specific purposes.

-Methodology and Didactic Studies in the English language in an international context.

-Translation Studies in English.
