Presentation

The International Symposium on Geodetic Deformation Monitoring: From Geophysical to Engineering Roles will be held at the University of Jaén (Spain) from 17th to 19th March 2005. The Symposium will be hosted by the Geodesy Research Group of the University of Jaén.

Topics of the Symposium

The main topics of the Symposium will be: Mathematical and Statistical Models for Crustal Deformation Analysis, Deformation Monitoring from GPS and InSAR data: Analysis and Geophysical Interpretation, Geodetic Monitoring of Movements in Civil Engineering, Integration of Spatial and Terrestrial Techniques in Deformation Studies, Geodynamical Applications of Gravimetric Observations, Gravity and Structure of the Earth's Interior, Present-day Geodetic Instrumentation for Deformation Monitoring

Official Language

The official language of the Symposium will be English. Simultaneous interpretation will not be provided. Therefore it is expected that authors are able to present their research in more or less fluent English.

Social Programme

The social programme will include the sightseeing of the historical part of the city and a dinner at Santa Catalina Castle. There is planned a post-Symposium one-day excursion to visit the humanity cities Ubeda and Baeza on 19 March . These cities are about 50 km from Jaén. The trip will be arranged if there are more than 40 pre-registrated participants.

The Venue

Jaén is a large municipal area located in the Central South West of the province and which contains the provincial capital. Within the municipal area there is an expansive area of rolling countryside, to the north of the city, and another smaller area of mountain, to the south, set between the Sierra Sur and Sierra Mágina district hills. The town is built around the edges of Santa Catalina Hill, with the castle atop it, from where one can enjoy a wide panoramic view over the province. Economic activities mainly revolve around the service sector, construction, commerce, agriculture and industry. The plains next to the Guadalbullón and Jaén rivers, where there was some market gardening in years gone by, have been converted into residencial districts and grazing areas for milk herds. Outstanding examples of the rich architectural heritage of Jaén city are the Cathedral, built in the renaissance style by Andrés de Vandelvira, and the Arab Baths.
