1. PME 24 - Plans for PME STL Discussion Group Meetings in Hiroshima

We had hoped that the list of accepted papers would be available, but it has not yet been published. Hopefully it will be posted on PME24 Website before we leave our homes (See: <http://home.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/~pme24/>).

Two meetings have been set down for Discussion Groups. We are quite willing to receive further offers of brief talks, but it is better if you can tell us in advance. Please write to John Truran at <truranjk@camtech.net.au> by Tuesday 18 July. I will reply on the 19th, but am away from 5–18 July (and do not read my e-mail when I am away!).

We remind you that we try to make things as easy as possible for people who are not strong in English. Clear overhead transparencies always make things easier. We can help with translations, especially if we have advance notice. The group is very friendly and tolerant, and we do not want people to feel that their English will not be good enough.

The following timetable was announced in the last Newsletter. For a full version of Letter 23 visit the group’s Website at: <http://www.beeri.org.il/stochastics>.

First Meeting Monday 24 July 2000, 18:00 to 19:30

Discussion on the topic The Relationship between Stochastical and Mathematical Thinking, Learning, and Teaching. There will be three presentations (each 10 minutes with 10 minutes for discussion)

1. The Relation between Pattern and Randomness (Jenni Way and Paul Ayres).

2. Relations between Probability and other Languages of Science, particularly to the Pythagorean "arithmo-geometry" carried on d-dimensions and in the continuum and discrete spaces, closely connected: A Didactic Use (Mario Barra).

3. Perspectives from Students and Teachers on the Differences in Thinking in Mathematics and Statistics (James Nicholson). [This paper will probably be held over until Thursday because time will be short.]

Members are invited to join the co-ordinators for dinner at a local restaurant. See details below.

Second Meeting Thursday 27 July 2000, 13:30 to 15:00

2. Plans for the Discussion Group Dinner at PME24

James Nicholson will be arriving in Hiroshima on the Friday before the Conference. He will arrange a suitable inexpensive restaurant before the conference starts. It will be a help if he has some idea of numbers. If you would like to attend, please write to him at <j.r.nicholson@qub.ac.uk> by Friday 14 July and he will add your name to the list.

3. Early Bird Papers for PME25, Utrecht, 2001

Most of you will have received a notice from Joop van Dormolen at PME about the facilities available for young researchers for receiving mentoring in preparation for submitting a paper to PME in 2001. This new and very supportive procedure has a long lead time of 12 months. If you are a beginning researcher or if you know a beginning researcher who plans to go to Utrecht, The Netherlands, next year, NOW is the time to ask for this help.

Write to Abraham Arcavi by 15 July 2000 with respect to papers for 2001. For later years you can write at any time. Until 15 October Abraham is at <arcavi@soe.berkeley.edu>. After October he is at <ntarcavi@wiccmail.weizmann.ac.il>.

4. IASE Web Site

The International Association for Statistical Education (IASE) has a Web site, which provides much information useful for anyone involved with statistical education. As well as providing information about the IASE and the International Statistical Institute (ISI), it provides links to relevant conference sites, statistics teaching resources including sources of data for exercises, information on statistical packages, International Statistical Societies, National Data Archives and discussion lists. The site is regularly updated and you are encouraged to explore it starting at <http://www.cbs.nl/isi/iase.htm>.
