John Drakakis, PhD

John Drakakis, PhD, has published articles and chapters on Shakespeare, Elizabethan and Jacobean literature and drama; modern drama; media studies; modern critical theory and cultural studies, introductory studies of Shakespeare's Othello (1980) and Much Ado About Nothing (1981).

He was the editor of and contributor to British Radio Drama (1981); Alternative Shakespeares (1985); Shakespearean Tragedy, Longman Critical Reader series (1998); Shakespeare, Antony and Cleopatra, New Casebook series (1994); Richard III, Shakespeare Originals series (1996); Tragedy, Longman Critical Reader series (1998). His current work in progress is the New Arden Shakespeare edition of The Merchant of Venice, a book entitled Shakespearean Discourses, and the topic of Republicanism in Shakespeare. He was the General editor of the Routledge English Texts, and is currently the General Editor of the Routledge New Critical Idiom Series. He is a member of the editorial boards of Textual Practice, Critical Survey, and The Journal of Social Semiotics. He is also an elected Fellow of English Association.

Jüri Talvet has published in Estonian a collection of essays on Spanish and Catalan literature Hispaania vaim (The Spanish Spirit, 1995), on Estonian and world literature Tõrjumatu äär (The Irrefutable Edge, 2005), cultural-philosophic reflections Sümbiootiline kultuur (Symbiotic Culture, 2005), books of (travel) essays Teekond Hispaaniasse (1985, Estonia's annual literary prize in essay genre), Hispaaniast Ameerikasse (1992), Ameerika märkmed ehk Kaemusi Eestist (2000) and seven books of poetry. A selection of his poetry, Elegía estonia y otros poemas, was published in Spain, in 2002, while in 2005 his essay in English A Call for Cultural Symbiosis was published by Guernica, in Toronto. He has translated into Estonian both classical and modern works (Quevedo, Gracián, Calderón, Tirso de Molina, Espriu, Aleixandre, García Márquez, etc.). He is the editor and principal author of a manual of world literature for Estonian high schools and universities (Maailmakirjandus, I-II, Tallinn 1995-1999).
