Nicolás Ruiz Reyes

University of Jaén Rector

Born in Linares (Jaén) in 1967, I have been a Telecommunications Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid since 1993 and a PhD in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Alcalá since 2000.

After two years of professional performance in private companies, in 1993 I entered the University of Jaén, an institution where I have developed my entire professional university career (30 years). I am a University Professor in the area of ​​Signal Theory and Communications since 2010. I have taught Telecommunications Engineering (Undergraduate and Master's degrees), as well as in the Official Master's Degree in Land Transport and Logistics Engineering at the University of Jaén. Likewise, I have participated in various doctoral programs, having directed 10 doctoral theses.

In 2001 I created the 'Signal Treatment and Telecommunication Systems' Research Group, a group that I have directed from its origins to date (22 years). I have published more than 100 research papers in internationally renowned journals, the vast majority included in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) and more than 120 papers in relevant international conferences. Also, I have participated in 45 research projects financed in public calls, in 15 of them as principal investigator. I have also participated in 35 R&D contracts with private companies. I am a member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) and AES (Audio Engineering Society), reviewer of international journals belonging to the aforementioned societies and advisor to CNEAI, ANEP and ANECA in the area of ​​Electronic Technologies and Communications. The main lines of research are: signal processing in communications, classification, transcription and separation of sound sources, analysis of biomedical signals (ECG, EEG, EMG, etc.), characterization of materials using ultrasonic techniques and application of artificial intelligence to problems of optimization.

I have recognized five teaching periods, four six-year research periods, one six-year transfer period and five regional periods. In the field of university policy and management, I have held various one-person government positions at the University of Jaén for 27 consecutive years: Deputy Director of the Escuela Politécnica Superior de Linares (7 years); Director of the Department of Electronic, Telecommunications and Automatic Engineering (4 years); Vice Chancellor of Infrastructures, Campus Development and Sustainability (8 years), and Manager (just over 7 years). The Governing Council of the Junta de Andalucía approved my appointment as Rector of the University of Jaén on Monday, June 12, 2023, which was published in the Official Gazette of the Junta de Andalucía (BOJA) on Thursday, 15, 2023 .
