Presentation
The Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Research and Education: Art, Music and Design at the University of Jaén allows you to develop your professional and research skills in the field of art education.

The Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Research and Education: Art, Music and Design offers students the opportunity to obtain an intermediate degree between undergraduate and doctoral level in Art or Education. The programme focuses on research on artistic and aesthetic themes, with a particular focus on research on the arts in educational and social settings and artistic outreach.
This master’s programme equips students with professional and research skills, with three different specialisations:
- ‘Artistic creation and contemporary culture in education’, which is the most suitable of the three options for graduates in Education.
- Research and teaching of musical language at conservatories’, which is intended for students with an advanced conservatory degree in any musical specialisation, or an advanced degree or any other degree plus an intermediate conservatory degree.
- Research and professional skills in design’, which is aimed at students with an interest in visual arts, audiovisual production and mixed media.
Although this is not a professional master’s degree, it equips students to teach in different settings, work as artists, and, above all, to carry out research.
- To equip you to work in aesthetic research and education.
The course summary contains the full list of academic skills certified by the Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Research and Education: Art, Music and Design at the University of Jaén.
To take full advantage of the opportunities offered by the Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Research and Education: Art, Music and Design, the ideal applicant is someone with an interest in and knowledge of culture in general and art, music, visual arts and design in particular. This master’s programme is especially suitable for graduates in Preschool Education and Primary Education. It will also be of interest to graduates in Social Education or Social Work, who are considering intervention through art.
Although an advanced degree in Performing Arts, Music (Conservatory), Dance, Design, Visual Arts or Fine Art from an art school or university or a degree in Education will be beneficial and will increase your chances of being selected for the programme, this is not an essential requirement. Only applicants to the ‘Research and teaching of musical language at conservatories’ specialisation will be required to hold an advanced conservatory degree in any musical specialisation, or an advanced degree or any other degree plus an intermediate conservatory degree.
Generally speaking, this master’s programme is ideal for graduates with a strong interest in contributing to the advancement of knowledge and research, especially artistic research, art education research, art-based research and art-based research into art education.
Under Article 18, Section 2 of R.D. 822/2021, the master’s programme is also open to applicants with qualifications issued outside the European Higher Education Area. They will also receive detailed information about specific aspects of the master’s course (lecturers, tutors, coordinators, content, timetables, methodologies, work schedules, materials, use of the virtual platform, teaching spaces, etc.).
Under of Organic Law 2/2023, of March 22, on the University System (Article 33.a), which establishes students' right to "tutorial support and academic advising, as well as psycho-pedagogical guidance... under the terms set by university regulations". The law acknowledges the importance of tutoring and guidance within the university system. As a modern university committed to social outreach, we are aware of the need to provide resources to assist and work more closely with students. The master’s programme offers curricular tutoring and personalised academic support, as well as careers guidance
The traditional tutoring system will be expanded, incorporating different figures and activities to ensure that students receive comprehensive support. The following resources will be provided for this purpose: tutors, module coordinators, subject coordinators, dissertation supervisors, mentors and evaluation committee. Tutors will be appointed from among the most experienced teaching staff. They will be responsible for a group of students, providing them with ongoing personalised guidance, observing their achievements and progress, and addressing any queries or practical issues they may have. To this end, regular meetings and group tutoring sessions will be held. More technical questions raised by students will be passed on to other professors or experts. In short, tutors facilitate students’ integration into the programme as a whole. Subject coordinators will be appointed to standardise the theoretical and practical content of modules taught by several different lecturers. They will also participate in specialised tutoring as part of the module coordination. Dissertation supervisors are responsible for addressing any practical issues that students experience while preparing their dissertations. They will be selected on the basis of the topic and the students’ interests. All interactions between students and lecturers required under these roles will take place in tutorials. These will be scheduled for a set time and venue.
Admission: Applicants with the following qualifications will be given priority for admission to the ‘Artistic creation and contemporary culture in education’ specialisation:
- High preference: Advanced degrees in Education
- Medium preference: Advanced degrees in Fine Art, Art History, Humanities or Performing Arts, advanced conservatory degrees, advanced art school degrees

In the event that the course is oversubscribed and students must be selected, the procedures established for other official master’s programmes at UJA will be followed. These are based on the deadlines and procedures set out by the Andalusian Single District with regard to the different phases of admission following preenrolment and the existence of high, medium and low-preference qualifications.
Within these preference groups, applicants will be selected, where necessary, on the basis of their average grade at undergraduate level (60%) and their CV (40% for other merits). These scores will be evaluated by the academic coordination committee for the master’s programme, which comprises the programme coordinator and four teaching staff members, who will coordinate each of the three modules and the final project. Twenty students will be admitted to each of the three specialisations on this master’s programme. In the event that the course is oversubscribed, any remaining places will be distributed equally between the remaining specialisations.
Pre-enrolment and allocation of places will be carried out in a centralised manner by the Andalusian Single District Commission. Up-to-date deadlines and procedures can be found on their website.
This link contains specific information from UJA about pre-enrolment and enrolment procedures, deadlines, fees, etc.
All information regarding the specific development of the AMUDI Master's program is available in the Drive accessible via this link.
On the day of the Master’s presentation, there is a session specifically oriented towards students. In this session, the Master's coordination team provides a demonstration of the resources, tools, and materials that both the University of Jaén and the Master’s program make available to them before classes begin. Similarly, detailed information is offered on specific aspects of the degree (professors, tutors, coordinators, content, schedules, methodologies, work pace, materials, use of the virtual platform, teaching spaces, etc.).

Within the framework of Organic Law 2/2023, of March 22, on the University System (in its article 33), which recognizes the students' right to "tutoring and academic advising, psycho-educational support/guidance (...)" the importance of guidance and tutoring work within the current university system is acknowledged. Aware of the need to provide means of support and to foster closeness to students, in a modern university committed to its role of social outreach, the Master's program will offer curricular tutoring and personalized academic support, as well as mechanisms for professional guidance.
The traditional tutoring system is expected to be expanded by incorporating different roles and activities to guarantee and channel a complete monitoring of the students. To this end, the following resources are proposed: tutors, module coordinators, course coordinators, directors of the final Master's thesis, tutorials, and an evaluation committee. The completion of the creative and artistic transversal practical work inherent to the degree is also a tool for follow-up and support.
The role of the Master's Coordinator will be to support and ensure the best possible integration and academic performance of the students at all times, without prejudice to the possibility of establishing individualized or personalized tutoring programs, according to the decision that the Center may take in each case. In order to promote student orientation towards research, the coordination team will keep informed, and will inform students, through graduate studies prepared by the University, about the possible research and professional trajectories of the students. In this case, their role will primarily be one of promotion and guidance.
The first days of each academic year, the University of Jaén organizes Welcome Days for incoming students. These general sessions are complemented by a specific session of each master's program, in which the master's coordinator, before the start of classes, holds a reception and orientation session aimed at new students in order to show the resources, tools and materials that both the University of Jaén and the master's degree put at their disposal. Detailed information is also provided on specific aspects of the degree (professors, tutors, coordinators, course contents, schedules, methodologies, work pace, materials, use of the virtual platform, teaching spaces, etc.).
The traditional tutoring system is to be expanded by incorporating different figures and activities to guarantee and channel a complete follow-up of the student body.
Tutors will be appointed among the most experienced teachers of the course. They will be in charge of a group of students, providing personal and continuous monitoring, observing their performance, progress and solving their doubts or practical problems. For this purpose, periodical meetings will be scheduled, and group tutoring sessions will be held. Tutors will also be responsible for passing on to other teachers or specialists any questions of a more technical nature raised by their students. In short, tutors are the means by which students can be integrated into the course as a whole.
Subject coordinators will also be appointed to unify the theoretical-practical contents across subjects taught by multiple professors. They will also collaborate in the specialized tutoring functions of the module coordination.
The direction of the Master's thesis is responsible for solving the practical problems posed to the students when carrying out this work. Supervisors will be chosen according to the topics of the research and the interests of the students. All interactions between students and professors that arise as a result of the above functions will be channeled through tutoring sessions. These will have a predefined time and place in the program.
As for the figure of the Master's Coordination, it will have the function of supporting and ensuring the student integration and academic success, without prejudice to the possibility of establishing, according to the decision that the University may take in each case, individualized or personalized tutoring programs. In order to promote the professional orientation of the students, the coordination will keep itself informed and will inform, through the studies of graduates elaborated by the University, about the possible professional projections of the students. In this case, its role will be primarily that of dynamization and orientation.
The University of Jaén’s policy is to centralise the use of the spaces on the campus in order to optimise their occupation while meeting the specific needs of the courses delivered. These shared facilities will be used in part during this degree programme. Although they are not exclusively for use by the students on the programme, it is important to acknowledge their presence as the University allocates certain time slots and facilities to each degree programme from among the available classrooms, laboratories and IT rooms depending on the specific needs of the programmes and in coordination with the other courses taught at the University.
Additional information about University of Jaén facilities:
As well as the resources listed, the University of Jaén offers additional material resources and services, which may be grouped into three main blocks: Library, ICT and Accessibility & Disability Services.

ARTISTIC CREATION AND CONTEMPORARY CULTURE IN EDUCATION 19
|
This track places its emphasis on the socio-educational field, based on our conviction of the importance that art (and, specifically, the 'forgotten' contemporary art) must play in 21st-century education. We follow, in this way, the seminal studies of Edgar Morin (and his paradigm of complexity) in relation to the development of the configuration and discursivity of the most current art. Arts and audiovisual culture are necessary content for future professionals in Education, both in their theoretical and practical framework; deepening into the fields of Education, Aesthetics, and Art. It is not only a space for artistic production but also provides the instruments and tools that allow for its understanding and development in teaching-learning situations of and from the arts. his itinerary will provide specialized artistic training in the fields of contemporary aesthetic education, attending fundamentally to the theoretical-practical study of the foundations of artistic expression in education, current trends, and educational currents of aesthetic training.
In accordance with the above, some of the competencies that students who take this specialty will develop are: 1) Knowledge of the role that arts and humanities can and must play in personal development, in all its dimensions, 2) Knowledge of innovative artistic programs in education and the role of the arts in an integrated curriculum, 3) Ability to develop and apply holistic educational programs in and through the arts, 4) Knowledge of resources for the dynamization of the arts in diverse socio-educational contexts; and their design and application as well as instruments for their cultural management, 5) Identification of the diverse aspects and perspectives of cultural agency, and 6) Ability to assess the specific characteristics of today's art versus the understanding of art prior to the 20th century for the critical assimilation of current art and apprehension of "experimental" and "intermediate" concepts.
|
|
RESEARCH AND TEACHING OF MUSICAL LANGUAGE IN CONSERVATORIES
|
This track is based on the conviction of the important role that music must play in a holistic and humanistic education, in line with what was expounded by Martha Nussbaum. At the same time, it aims for the acquisition, by the students, of creative and innovative didactic strategies that echo the socio-educational reality and that can be put into practice in the musical education taught in conservatories. It is especially intended, although not exclusively, to provide teaching tools in the subjects of "Musical Language" —which is taught over six academic years— and "Choir" —over two— in the Elementary and Professional Grades of the teachings of any specialty in Music Conservatories. The heterogeneity of current postmodern society will be the fundamental pillar upon which the methods, strategies, and perspectives of this itinerary are articulated.
In accordance with the above, some of the competencies that students who take this specialty will develop are: 1) Deepening in the main theories, trends, and methodological approaches in the teaching of Musical Language, 2) Analysis of the role played by music as a social and cultural phenomenon, 3) Ability to know the current methodologies employed in the study of singing, 4) Familiarization with practices of sound exploration stimulation with and without the help of the computer, 5) Ability to express musical ideas through interpretation and improvisation, and 6) Knowledge and experimentation in the creation of content for the teaching of Musical Language in Conservatories within the framework of the information society and Web 2.0.

|
RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONALIZATION IN DESIGN 32
|
The main objective is advanced academic and professional training, oriented to promote experimentation in the field of design and its adaptation to multicultural codes and collectives, developing capabilities inherent to this field whose goal is a correct connection with the professional sphere. This itinerary is directed at higher graduates of Art Schools, bachelor's degree holders, and professionals who wish to update their knowledge or skills. Likewise, being an official degree, the 60 ECTS credits it grants are recognized in the doctoral program, which allows participation in mobility and exchange programs with other European universities.
In accordance with the above, some of the competencies that students who take this specialty will develop are: 1) Familiarization with the state of the art and with the implementation of research and innovative projects in Design, 2) Deepening in the main theories, trends, and methodological approaches in Design research, 3) Analysis of the role played by Design as a social and cultural phenomenon, 4) Ability to know the current methodologies employed in Design, 5) Ability to analyze the production process of contemporary editing, 6) Ability to express ideas through design, 7) Study and deepening in the main procedures for contemporary creation in Design, 8) Ability for Inquiry, argumentation, and reflection on Design and its education.

Are you a UJA master's student looking for mobility opportunities?
In addition to the mobility programs available in our international calls section and the mobility grants and scholarships offered by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, the University of Jaén provides specific funding for international mobility, language proficiency development programs, and cultural exchange opportunities. These resources help you gain a competitive edge in the job market once you complete your studies.
You can also benefit from Blended Intensive Programs (BIPs)—short-term, innovative learning initiatives funded by Erasmus+. These programs combine online learning with physical mobility, promoting flexible student mobility and transnational collaboration on specific challenges, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Additionally, you can earn academic recognition for participating in these activities.

Career Guidance
Participating in extracurricular external academic internships provides significant benefits for students’ training while offering host companies a direct insight into their skills, competencies, and academic background.
The University of Jaén recognizes that practical experience is a key component of professional preparation, providing students with numerous opportunities for extracurricular external academic internships.
What are extracurricular external academic internships?
These are voluntary internships that students can undertake during their studies. While they serve the same purpose as curricular internships, they are not part of the official study plan.
For more information about external academic internships, click here.

Even without a specific Tutoring Action Plan (PAT), welcome sessions are held focusing on career and academic guidance.
Furthermore, students in each course receive personalized support, adapting to their individual needs and organizing activities for integration and academic well-being.
The master's teaching methodology significantly contributes to the success of this tutorial guidance. For this reason, students are encouraged to join the master's internal social media groups to stay continuously informed about and connected with their needs.
While this isn't a professional master's degree, it helps graduates secure positions in public organizations and guides them toward professional profiles aligned with their training.
We have detailed information on the achievement of this objective thanks to continuous contact with our alumni. This is maintained through sending invitations to ongoing training events that we organize, such as research seminars, conferences, workshops, and publications.
Through these activities, alumni attend directly from their workplaces, the vast majority being teachers at early childhood, primary, art school, and conservatory levels.
Notably, a significant percentage of master's graduates go on to become part of the teaching and research staff (PDI) at various universities. This is often a result of their admission into doctoral studies, having obtained this master's degree, which is fundamentally research-oriented.
For this reason, the master's program includes a professional guidance tutorial action plan. This plan encourages students to pursue further university studies at the doctoral level and engage in research, providing guidance on relevant research areas and opportunities to undertake these studies.
