Recognition of qualifications

If you would like to work in Spain and pursue a career at UJA, you will need to check whether your university degree from your country of origin will be accepted in Spain well in advance of travelling to the country.

Generally speaking, there are two pathways for incoming foreign researchers to obtain recognition of their qualifications: homologation and equivalence.

Recognition of qualificationsThe homologation procedure is used to obtain official recognition of the validity of foreign academic or professional qualifications in Spain. Please bear in mind that homologation differs from equivalence, which simply compares the foreign qualification to a Spanish undergraduate or postgraduate degree in academic terms. In other words, equivalence only entails academic recognition, whereas homologation represents both academic and professional recognition.

The homologation procedure is described on the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training website.

The official homologation process can be very long and you will be required to (a) have passed the DELE Spanish exam at B2 level (if Spanish is not your native language) and (b) provide sworn translations in Spanish of your university documents (you can find a list of sworn translators in Spain online). Homologation is not necessary if you only wish to pursue a doctoral programme at the University of Jaén. The entry requirements for doctoral programmes are:

types of applicants
Applicants from the EHEA Possess an official university degree from Spain or another country in the European Higher Education Area qualifying you for access to master’s programmes [...] and have obtained a minimum of 300 ECTS credits during official university degree programmes, at least 60 of which must be at master’s level.
Applicants from other countries Possess a degree obtained under a foreign education system [...] that has been confirmed by the university to accredit a level of training equivalent to that of an official Spanish master’s degree and to qualify the holder for access to doctoral studies in the issuing country.

Finally, if you already have a PhD qualification, we recommend that you apply for your degree to be recognised as an equivalent PhD qualification from UJA via the Declaration of Equivalence of Foreign Higher Education Qualifications at PhD level at the University of Jaén.
