Graduated in English Philology by the Universidad de Granada (1988), she obtained a PhD in the same university in 1998 with a thesis dissertation dealing with Chinua Achebe's narrative production. She started teaching in higher education in 1990, and in 2000 she became Associate Professor at the Department of English Philology at the Universidad de Jaén.

She is a specialist in English-speaking postcolonial literature, with particular attention to African literature. Within this field of research, she has published several studies on authors like Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Ben Okri, Ngugi Wa Thiong'o, among others. She has also paid attention to issues like Australian Aboriginal poetry, the narrative of Michael Ondaatje, John. M. Coetzee, Hanif Kureishi and others. In 2014, she was invited to be a plenary speaker at Chinua Achebe's tribute events at Brown University (Providence, USA), where the Nigerian novelist had been a professor.

As for community service, she has held various positions in university management. To mention some, she has been Secretary of the Department of English Philology (2001-2008), as well as Head of Department of English Philology between 2008 and 2016.
