Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs)

Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs)

What are BIPs?

Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) are short programmes that use innovative forms of learning and teaching. The programmes can include challenge-based learning, where transnational and transdisciplinary teams work together to solve challenges, such as those linked to the Sustainable Development Goals or other societal challenges identified by regions, cities or companies. These programmes are funded under the Erasmus+ KA131 programme, and aim to foster blended student mobility to complement their training, opening up opportunities for more flexible mobility without the barriers that often limit participation in traditional mobility through official study programme subjects.

Combined temporary mobility can serve as a crucial starting point for students who are undecided about studying abroad. This option provides the possibility to build on the connections and experiences gained to develop a mobility approach that is innovative and more inclusive. Crucially, the programme offers additional value compared to current educational options. By opening the door to new and more flexible mobility formats, intensive blended programmes aim to be accessible to students from diverse backgrounds, fields of study and academic levels.

BIPs combine online teaching with a short period of physical mobility, usually 1 week (up to 30 days), and have a minimum load of 3 ECTS. BIPs involve at least three higher education institutions, which jointly define the physical and virtual learning components in a given subject area of interest to the proposing institutions.

How does the University of Jaén participate in a BIP?

The University of Jaén will be able to participate in combined intensive programmes in two ways:

  • As the coordinating entity of the programme: in this case, it will coordinate the organisation, receive and manage the funding for organisational support of the combined intensive programme, when applicable. By default, the coordinating university will be the host university, unless otherwise agreed by the partners. The Vice-Rectorate for Internationalisation shall periodically publish calls for applications addressed to the university's teaching, technical, management, administration and services staff, with a view to selecting the combined intensive programmes to which to allocate the organisational funding available each year.

  • As a partner entity of the programme: In this case, UJA will act as a partner and sending entity for BIP participants. The participation of UJA as a partner does not entail any funding for organisational costs. The selection of these programmes will lead to the publication of separate calls for applications, on a competitive basis, aimed at granting mobility aids to the participants in these programmes (teaching and research staff and student body on the one hand, and students on the other).

  • If the University is not a partner of the programme: students may participate individually as trainees, taking advantage of the respective mobility calls promoted by the Vice-rectorate for Internationalisation.

I am a student: how can I participate in a BIP?

For BIPs organised by UJA partner institutions, or for others that do not include UJA as a partner institution, students can participate as learners as beneficiaries of Erasmus+ grants. For this purpose, the Vice-rectorate for Internationalisation will call for grants for physical and virtual mobility, aimed at UJA students. To apply for these grants, students must contact the organising University in order to obtain the letter of acceptance, a prerequisite for obtaining the financial aid, to be included in the application form.
