Objetives
Facilitate the creation of Knowledge-Based Companies (KBCs) based on technologies and innovations developed at the University of Jaén. A KBC is an entrepreneurial initiative aimed at producing goods or providing services with high added value, leveraging the results derived from research activity carried out at the university.
This initiative aims to foster the creation of KBCs originating from the University of Jaén through tools such as training, financial support, access to infrastructure or services, and recognition as a UJA Spin-Off, among others, to support both their creation and early-stage development.
This initiative is structured into two programs:
- KBC Seed: For promoting an entrepreneurial culture through incentives and technical support for the creation of KBCs.
- KBC UJA Plus: Financial incentives and support tools in their early stages (first 18 months from incorporation) for existing KBCs.
Additionally, KBCs considered "social enterprises"—those whose primary mission is to achieve a social impact rather than generate economic profit for their owners—will receive distinct recognition under this action.
Conditions
- The company must comply with the requirements established in current regulations to obtain recognition as a UJA Spin-Off. Advice on Incorporation: Technical support will be offered during the pre-creation phase of the Knowledge-Based Company (KBC Seed phase) to facilitate its startup.
- Use of Infrastructure: Access to infrastructure will be regulated both by general regulations and the specific call for applications.
- KBC UJA Plus Program: An objective-based financing model designed to accelerate the real transfer of results to the market.
Two mutually non-exclusive call-by-call funding modalities are established, though they are incompatible within the same fiscal year:
1. Modality A: Grant for KBCs in the Seed Phase Targeted at KBC projects that are not legally incorporated on the publication date of the call.
Maximum amount: Up to €6,000 per proposal. For Social Enterprises, the maximum funding limit will increase by 20%, reaching up to €7,200 per beneficiary company.
Eligible activities: Funds from this modality will be exclusively used to cover external service costs for the following actions: a) Advanced and specialized training for the founding team in business creation and management. b) Consulting for the design and validation of the business model and preparation of the business plan. c) Expert mentoring for team composition, product/service development, and financing strategy. d) Market studies, commercial feasibility analysis, and technical validation of the product or service. e) Legal advice for formalizing the partners' agreement and the legal incorporation of the company.
2. Modality B: Grant for KBCs in the Development Phase (KBC UJA Plus)
Targeted at KBCs that, meeting the established requirements, have been officially incorporated within the 18 months prior to the application date, are registered in the economic activities tax register (AEAT), and present a growth plan with verifiable short-term objectives.
The maximum grant amount will be up to €10,000 per beneficiary company. For Social Enterprises, the maximum funding limit will increase by 20%, reaching up to €12,000 per beneficiary company.
The grant for this modality will be structured in two tranches linked to the fulfillment of measurable objectives (milestones) defined in the approved Work Plan:
- Tranche 1 (initial): Up to 50% of the awarded grant, following a favorable resolution and acceptance of conditions.
- Tranche 2 (objective-based): Up to the remaining 50%, subject to proof of achieving the milestones established in the call.
- Funds from this modality will cover the following expense concepts: a) Advanced advisory and consulting services. b) Promotion and marketing. c) Organizational and technological improvements. d) Staff costs. e) Current operating expenses.
- Incubation/Hosting (not counted toward the maximum limit): Beneficiary KBCs may apply for incubation in university facilities specifically dedicated to this purpose, under the terms established in the call.
Applicant Requirements
- Single applicant: Must be a PhD researcher with a civil service or employment relationship with the University of Jaén throughout the grant execution period.
- Multiple applicants: The Principal Investigator (PI) must satisfy the requirement above. Remaining team members may be teaching and research staff from the University of Jaén, or other predoctoral/postdoctoral personnel with a contractual relationship with the University of Jaén during the grant execution period.
- Any additional requirements set forth in the general regulations or the text of the call.
Application Submission
Applications must be submitted through the Electronic Office of the University of Jaén (Sede Electrónica), attaching the documentation specified and required in the call.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be evaluated according to the call once approved by the OTRI management.
Obligations of Beneficiaries
Those established in both the general regulations and the text of the call for applications.
