The University of Jaén (UJA) has joined the commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an event proclaimed in 2016 by the United Nations General Assembly with the aim of highlighting the role of women in scientific and technological fields, as well as promoting STEM vocations among young women.

In this context, the University of Jaén (UJA) has developed a program of activities focused on outreach, education, and the creation of female role models in science. Among the main initiatives is the series of workshops entitled "A Day with a Scientist at the University of Jaén," aimed at primary school students in the province. These activities have taken place on the Jaén and Linares campuses, offering students direct experience with female researchers and professors from various fields of knowledge.

The program has also included informative talks aimed at secondary school students, delivered both in person at schools and online. These sessions have provided a glimpse into the realities of science and technology professions, while also addressing the challenges that still exist regarding gender equality in these fields.

As a complement, the university radio station UniRadio Jaén has produced a special program dedicated to this anniversary, directed and presented by Julio Ángel Olivares Merino. This program featured interviews with female professors and researchers from the University of Jaén, who also lead practical workshops as part of the initiative.

Among them were Sara Suárez Manzano, with the workshop “The Magic of the Five Senses”; María del Mar Contreras Gámez, with “Bio-Challenges: Transforming Biomass into Products”; Jessica Zaqueros Martínez, with “Decipher the Secret! Caesar’s Code”; María Dolores Pérez Godoy, focused on artificial intelligence applications; Ana Belén Gómez Fernández, with a proposal on women and work throughout history; and María José Grande Burgos, with the workshop “Surrounded by Microorganisms”.

Taken together, these activities reflect the University of Jaén's commitment to promoting equality in the scientific field, contributing to making female talent visible and generating role models that encourage new generations to develop their future in science and technology.
