The University of Jaén (UJA) has brought its program of activities for International Women's Day to a close with a wide range of initiatives developed throughout the month of March, focused on raising awareness, reflecting and promoting gender equality.
The program, promoted by the Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Diversity, and Social Responsibility in conjunction with various university centers and groups, has brought together a diverse range of academic, cultural, and participatory activities. Among them, the collaborative mural “Painting Equality,” organized by the University of Jaén Student Council, stood out, transforming the university space into a meeting point for artistic expression and social engagement.
In the academic sphere, several conferences were held that addressed the gender perspective from different fields of knowledge. These included the talk “Female Engineers from Jaén at the Bank of Spain,” given by Elena Malagón Álvarez, and the conference on workplace harassment from a gender perspective, presented by María Acale Sánchez. Additionally, meetings were held focusing on the history, education, and role of women in different social contexts, such as the conference “Roma Women in History.”
The program also included dynamic activities designed to engage students, such as the card game and escape room “Women in Science,” organized by the Faculty of Experimental Sciences, as well as creative workshops like “Dominga Talks to Herself,” led by illustrator Elisabeth Justicia. These initiatives fostered active learning and reflection through innovative approaches.
Among the cultural program highlights were the conference on the opera "La Regenta: Artistic Creation and Feminism," and the biographical exhibition "I Have Worked All My Life," which focused on recovering memories and knowledge from a gender perspective. These were complemented by activities such as "Fem-graphies: Feminist Cartographies of Security," which promoted collective analysis of the environment from a feminist viewpoint.
In addition, institutional manifestos were published by the Network of Gender Equality Units for University Excellence and CRUE Spanish Universities, reinforcing the university system's commitment to equality.
The program concluded with proposals such as the archaeological visit to the Iberian Sanctuary of the Cave of the Wolf, offering a feminine perspective on historical heritage, and with various activities that have had outstanding participation from the university community and the public.
Overall, this program has demonstrated the University of Jaén's firm commitment to promoting gender equality, consolidating March 8th as a key date for awareness, dialogue and action within and outside the university environment.
