25N 2025

The University of Jaén presented its program of commemorative activities for November 25th, with which, once again, the university joined in remembering and advocating for the fight against violence suffered by women and girls simply for being women. This was stated by the Vice-Rector for Equality, Social Responsibility, and Diversity at the University of Jaén, Pilar Fernández Pantoja, at the presentation of this program for the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. “It was 2025, and we were still fighting and advocating because, alongside important advances, significant setbacks could also occur, which was our greatest fear. It was a time to remember how women's movements, which, when organized, represented a true force, were key to progress in addressing real inequalities,” she declared.

That year, the chosen program theme was 'More than 30 years of commitment against violence towards women and girls', in remembrance of the celebration of the IV Conference on Women in Beijing (China), known as the Beijing Declaration and Platform, in which there was an unprecedented international response that brought together 189 governments, as well as multiple NGOs, "a true milestone that went beyond a declaration of intent."

Regarding the commemoration of November 25th, Pilar Fernández pointed out the importance of remembering the victims of gender violence, “who were not only women, but also their sons and daughters.” In this sense, she explained that this program “addressed, from our respective areas of concern, the role that the University could play.” “The University has strong missions; that is our social commitment. Through our daily work—teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and effective action—we had a duty to be active agents in raising awareness, prevention, action, intervention, accountability, and dissemination of all of this so that public authorities, who are responsible for implementing and incorporating it into their public policies in response to society's demands, would listen to us. What kind of society can…”

“Do we want setbacks in the face of progress?” the vice-rector stated.

Program of activities

For her part, the director of the Equality Unit of the UJA, Nieves Moyano Muñoz, was in charge of detailing the program organized by the Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Diversity and Social Responsibility, whose hallmark was transversality, which facilitated the commitment and participation of the UJA through its Faculties, Centers, the Seminar on Women, Science and Society, the Student Council or the university radio UniRadio Jaén, to whom she expressed her gratitude for their involvement, effort and commitment.

The first activity, already underway, was the poster competition for November 25th (Redesigning Respect) at the Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences, whose winner was announced on Monday. Also on Monday, the book 'From Gender Violence to Feminist Counter-Narratives: Multidisciplinary Studies', coordinated by Yolanda Caballero and Carmen M. Gálvez, was presented.

On Thursday, November 13th, the conference 'Vicarious Violence: Legal Aspects and Psychosocial Impact' was held, a topic of particular importance that year given the legal reform that criminalized vicarious violence and established the obligation to hear children before deciding on custody arrangements. The speakers were Gracia Rodríguez Velasco, former prosecutor specializing in gender violence at the Jaén Prosecutor's Office, and José Carlos Ríos Lechuga, PhD in Psychology and specialist in Legal and Forensic Psychology.

On Friday the 14th, the conference/talk 'History of health professions with a gender perspective' took place, led by Cristina Álvarez García, professor of History of Nursing.

The activities continued on Monday, November 17th, with the 'Violet Cluedo' event, organized in collaboration with the Jaén-based company Small Clown. This fun and educational activity encouraged reflection on equality and gender violence through play and active participation.

On Tuesday the 18th, the workshop 'Stories and orality as a tool to prevent violence against women' was held, led by actress Noelia Camacho, with the aim of creating a creative space for social change.

On Thursday, November 20th, the workshop 'Healthy and Respectful Relationships', led by Antonio López Delgado, took place. The conference 'Institutions of “Protection”, Repression, and Punishment of Women', organized by various entities, also featured presentations by Yolanda Caballero Aceituno and Pilar Iglesias.

On Monday, November 24, UniRadio Jaén broadcast a special program presented by María Cózar and the Jaén Commission for Equality and against Gender Violence. On Tuesday, November 25, a rally and reading of the 25N manifesto took place at the entrance to the Rectorate Building.

Finally, on Wednesday, November 26, two activities took place: the round table 'Professional experiences against gender violence of graduates in Social Work from the UJA', with the participation of several professionals, and the workshop 'Building good treatment in collective: breaking down invisible walls of gender violence', given by Mariví Ruiz Criado.
